Stale Art Reviews
Ok, so they’re beyond a week overdue, but still valid. (If only to me.)
The Basha Gallery hosted a “soiree featuring fine-art nudes and Orchid photography” on April 27th. The quote was from the invitation and so I have to point out that by Orchid Photography they of course meant pictures of naked women with flowers in the background. The show was actually pretty good. I was most impressed with the photographer, Karim Shamisi-Basha, when asked about his unlikely choice for a male model. (An older man in Romanesque poses and a cloth masking his manhood.) Karim replied, “When you shoot nudes you always have to have a male model or else everyone thinks you are some kind of pervert.” Honesty from an artist. Now that’s refreshing.
The Magic City Art Connection held on April 28th-30th was less than refreshing. In one word it was; Tired. Old artists with re-worked ideas. New artists with over-worked ideas. Maybe I’m just jaded. Don’t get me wrong. There was art worth having there but the only thing I saw that really made me want to sell Angelbaby to the gypsies for spending money was a craftsman by the name of Dave Morrion. Wood Boxes was his specialty. He doesn’t have a website but you can find some of his work here.
